Terraplan Nominated to Participate in Xtreme LA

Terraplan is honoured to have been chosen to nominate a participant in Xtreme LA. Xtreme LA is a creative challenge for the landscape design leaders of tomorrow. A very small number of landscape architecture firms from across North America are invited to nominate their “best and brightest” LA’s, under 35 years of age, to participate in ”an intense two-day charrette calculated to challenge and inspire emerging design leaders”. Two teams will be created to work under the guidance of prominent landscape architects to “envision creative solutions for critical urban challenges”. For the competition this year, Shane Coen of Coen & Partners & Peter Lindsay of Hoerr,Schaudt will be the guides. The competition will take place at Kansas State University. Using maps, surveys, planning studies, regulatory guidelines, direct inspection of (local)land areas and information provided by local officials the teams will be asked to create socially, environmentally and economically sustainable solutions for Manhattan, Kansas a community growing far faster than had been anticipated. The challenges will include developing a vision and plan for appropriate population density and mix, proposing a future and massing that will maintain the quality of life that Manhattan residents value while providing new places for people to live, work and play in an environment that encourages innovation and creativity. This must be done while addressing sustainability challenges: zero carbon, zero waste & sustainable transport.
