In 2011, Terraplan joined a team of design professionals from across North America to provide plans for Premium Outlet Malls new destinations in Canada. The first expression of this cooperative endeavour is the Toronto Premium Outlet Mall in Halton Hills. This exciting project represents a new approach to retail design by Premium, where visitors are invited to leave their cars and walk through the attractive spaces within the outdoor mall. The landscape design for the central court includes a fountain, a large outdoor fireplace and a children’s play zone. A large synthetic grass berm situated next to the food court provides an opportunity for informal picnics and unstructured play. Extensive and varied planters have been placed throughout the mall to help organize and define the retail spaces. In addition, planting located at the entrances highlight the transition both to and from the parking areas. The extensive parking lots have been segmented through the careful placement of planted pedestrian access ways and bioswales. These elements provide a safe and direct route into the mall and are key components in ensuring that the project is environmentally sound. This ambitious development will serve as a model for future Premium Outlet Mall projects.
