The main purpose of this development is to utilize the methane by-product of sewage treatment at Ashbridge’s Bay Treatment Plant adjacent to the subject site. The proposed facility will harness this otherwise incinerated (and therefore wasted) gas to generate heat and electricity, which will provide a majority of the energy needs for the wastewater treatment plant. Terraplan Landscape Architects was retained by Toronto Hydro Energy Services to liaise with the municipality and the Conservation Authority, to create a landscape design and site plan approval package for this project.
We approached the design cognisant of the site’s connection the adjacent landscape and future Martin Goodman Trail and parks nearby. Additionally, the south landscape represents a naturalized berm with native plant material as an extension of the public space and an amenity of the public.
